How to Help Members Absorb Rule Changes

One of the first — if not the very first — training meetings before a new season should be a review of rule changes. It’s part of keeping your members up-to-date and on the same page. Here are some ways you can help the process.

1. Use visual aids
If you can get your hands on video that depicts situations in which the new rule would come into play, showing those clips is the best way to explain the change. If video isn’t available, use PowerPoint presentations or any material produced by a governing body (e.g. NFHS, NCAA, etc.) to increase understanding.

2. Discuss application
Rule makers routinely provide caseplays or approved rulings involving new rules. Have the group come up with additional situations, as long as they are not outlandish, once-in-a-lifetime, “A dog ran on the field and took the game ball” scenarios.

3. Role play
If facilities and the nature of the rule permit, try role playing. Common sense rules the day if you choose that route. Physical contact is to be avoided.

4. Invite an expert
If the local or state interpreter is not in your association, invite him or her to provide the most accurate information on the changes.
